ERIC BARONE

Also known by his alias ConcernedApe, Barone is an American video game developer, video game designer, artist, composer, and musician. He is most notable for creating Stardew Valley.

He moved to Seattle at a young age and lives there to this day. He grew up loving video games and computers. He cites the Harvest Moon series as his favorite as a child.

Barone attended the University of Washington Tacoma and graduated in 2011 with a degree in computer science.

DEVELOPMENT OF STARDEW VALLEY

Barone developed the game by himself over four years. He began working in 2012 and released it in 2016. He was praised for creating the game entirely independently. He did everything from making the characters, writing the dialogue, creating the music, and animating every pixel. He was heavily inspired by the Harvest Moon video game series, with additions to address some of the shortcomings of those games. He used it as an exercise to improve his own programming and game design skills. British studio Chucklefish approached Barone midway through development with the offer to publish the game, allowing him to focus more on completing it. Stardew Valley was both a critical and commercial success, selling over 10 million copies by 2020.

Barone announced that he is working on several new games with at least one of them set to be in the world of Stardew Valley. Another game that he is working on is also tied with Stardew Valley in some way. In February 2021, Barone and board game designer Cole Meideros released a cooperative board game adaptation of Stardew Valley titled Stardew Valley: The Board Game.
